Richard Kagan, CLU
Richard Kagan’s business career began in 1969 when at the age of 23 moved to Los Angeles to enter the life insurance profession. He started out with nothing: no family connections, no professional contacts, and no prospects. By the time he was 35, however, he was the leading agent of Connecticut Mutual, one of the nation’s most respected life insurance companies. Professional profiles in Forbes and Fortune magazines soon followed, which created a demand for his services as a keynote speaker at life insurance conferences all over the US, Canada, and England, where he addressed sold-out audiences in the thousands. The life insurance industry has honored Kagan with at least 100 awards for his work.
Richard’s insurance business has always been by referral only. Today, his unique expertise in wealth transfer techniques through life insurance has made him the agent of choice for referrals from affluent families and family offices throughout the United States. He has worked with Tax Exempt corporations and foundations to design their Executive Employee Benefit Programs, and his clients in the entertainment industry are a “Who’s Who” of famous musicians, actors, writers, producers, independent production companies, and two of the most famous celebrity chefs in the world. In 2022, Richard wrote what is considered the largest life insurance policy ever placed on an individual life.
In parallel with his highly successful professional career in the insurance industry, Richard has devoted himself to philanthropic work and charitable giving. He served as President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Los Angeles’ Center Theatre Group, one of America’s largest not-for-profit theatre companies. He also served on the Board and Executive Committee of the historic Fifth Avenue Theater in Seattle, which was transformed from a failing rental space on the brink of closure into a nationally-recognized powerhouse of musical theater. Richard joined the AltaMed Health Care Foundation in support of their mission to increase access to health services for underserved Latino communities in Southern California. He served as Vice Chair of the Los Angeles Police Foundation, and on the Board and Executive Committee of the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation. He is a member of the Board of Governors of Cedars Sinai Medical Center and served as President of their Grand Foundation, which raised millions of dollars for heart research under his leadership.
Additionally, Richard is a musical composer whose latest work, Havana Music Hall, was recently produced in Miami to great critical acclaim. He is a two-time Tony award nominee who produced his first Broadway show, The World’s A Stage, at the Lyceum Theater at age 22. He co-produced several musicals for his lifelong friend, composer Marvin Hamlisch, including The Goodbye Girl and Smile, which landed him an interview with Diane Sawyer on 60 Minutes. He co-produced Private Lives starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, and was nominated for a Tony as co-producer of the musical Leader of the Pack. For a school charity event, he created an original musical starring Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft.
